Over the past 50 years, millions of little musicians are learning to play their instruments using the Suzuki method . And now turns out a truth that could take down this kind of learning: the truth of the fraud.
What exactly is this type of method? There are a lot of really good ideas in this approach , but there is a bad central idea: the imitation . Basically, children learn to play by imitation , replaying the same notes and melodies in a mechanical way.
The violin teacher Mark O’Connor (who is also the inventor of another method, based more on ear training but with similar points with the criticized system ) accused dr.Suzuki of being a liar. Mr. O’Connor has posted on his blog a page from the Conservatory of Music in Berlin where dr. Suzuki confirmed that he had studied which shows that Dr.Suzuki , at age 24 in 1923 , was rejected after his failed audition .
Shinichi Suzuki did not learn the art of violin by any great teacher. Basically self-taught , he started at 18 and has never had access to a position in the orchestra.
I think this is the worst way of teaching music. Ok , it’s working , maybe for someone , but this method can open only the technical side of playing music. And we have forgotten that music is an emotional issue first?
Teach rapidly tons of music , even the most difficult ones , such as Chopin , Debussy , Ravel, without having any kind of emotional preparation .
A good performer is the one who can get a feeling from a melody , and being fascinated and changed by emotions he is able to transfer them to the listener. It’s unimaginable that a 3/4 years old musician (if you take a look at Youtube you can find several “child prodigies” )is able to understand and process emotions coming from a Notturno and transfer them only after learning how technically play that notturno.
I believe that this method contributes more to create robots – musicians.
And as for their time ? Childhood is not a waste of time , and several families ” invest ” on the child hoping one day he’ll become a well known name in classical music field. The child must repeat and repeat , play every day in a mechanical way . Sounds more like a job in a factory than a childhood with the music.
The most emotive musical expression comes just from emotion. Maybe it would be better to teach children music with the craziest approach ever, without a single music sheet if it become another way to turn out a robotic players without emotion generation.
At this time, in the British Suzuki Institute opinion, there is more than a quarter of milion of musicians that are learning how to play with this method, taught by over 8000 teachers.
